The 2005 Tyndall AFB Gulf Coast Salute greeted airshow fans on 14-15 May 2005 with a wonderful variety of performers and static displays during some of the most ideal airshow weather conditions in the southern Florida sunshine.

Headlining the event were the Canadian Forces Snowbirds.  This was the first show of the 2005 airshow season for the Snowbirds and each one of the performances showed that they were already in mid-season form with great formations, crisp maneuvers, and excellent choreography.   Each afternoon’s airshow concluded with their wonderful demonstration.

The morning events started with parachute demonstrations by the Canadian Forces Skyhawks and the US Army Golden Knights jumping from the Golden Knights’ C-31 aircraft.    Following the parachute demonstrations, the Red Eagles Air Sports team took to the skies above Tyndall AFB in their 2-ship Talon Eagle aircraft for some great aerobatics.   Other great civilian performances included Eric Beard in the Russian Thunder YAK 54 and Patty Wagstaff in her Extra 300.    Both of these performers, along with the Red Eagles amazed the over 45,000 in attendance with the best of civilian aerobatics each day.

Vintage aircraft saluted the veterans as the B-25J Mitchell, F4F Wildcat, and F6F Hellcat flew on Saturday and were joined by a B-17G Flying Fortress and P-40 Warhawk on Sunday for numerous passes and a photo pass.

But Tyndall AFB is all about the military and the military aircraft demonstrations is exactly what airshow fans got.    Tyndall’s own F/A-22 Raptors flew a 2-ship each afternoon with numerous passes and full afterburner takeoffs.   The F-15C Eagle West Coast Demonstration Team flew high shows each afternoon and was joined by the Holloman based F-4 Phantom II during the USAF Heritage Flights.    The Heritage Flight was flown in a Tyndall based F-4.     Moody AFB’s T-6A Texan II East Coast Demonstration Team also provided a great display of this new advanced trainer and teamed with Jim Tobul in his vintage T-6 aircraft for the USAF Texan Flight each afternoon.

The Fresno based California Air National Guard provided an exciting 2-ship F-16 Falcon demonstration each day which showcased the maneuverability of the aircraft.   Flybys on Saturday included the B-1B Lancer, B-2A Spirit, and B-52H Stratofortress aircraft.   Sheppard AFB also showcased a T-38C Talon from the NATO training wing each afternoon with numerous flybys.

Tyndall AFB also had Neal Darnell’s Flash Fire Jet Truck that ran twice per day to the delight of the airshow crowds.

Static display were numerous and included all types of aircraft and drones.   Tyndall was well represented in the displays with numerous drones, QF-4 Phantoms, F-15 Eagles, and F/A-22 Raptors.    The California Air National Guard provided five F-16s for static display.   Other static display aircraft included a C-5B Galaxy, C-17A Globemaster III, KC-135R Stratotanker, MiG-29 Fulcrum, T-38C Talon, CF-18 Hornet, a Tornado IDS and several dozen others.

Look for another great airshow at Tyndall AFB in the near future.
